Employment

New Substitute & Term Teachers

New applicants must follow the steps below to be considered for substitute teaching:

  • Apply on-line to the open Substitute Teacher job posting. You will be required to create and submit an online resume to apply. Please ensure the information on your resume is accurate and up to date as your qualifications of teachables will be reviewed.

  • Effective September 1st, 2011, the Halifax Regional School Board (HRSB) has implemented a new mandatory one-day Orientation Session for substitute teachers; sessions will be offered strategically throughout the school year at the HRSB Central Office, 33 Spectacle Lake Drive. All new applicants to the HRSB Substitute Teacher list from September 1st 2011 onward must attend an Orientation Session to remain active on AESOP (an automated substitute placement service provided by Frontline Placement Technologies which uses integrated internet and telephone technologies to assist School Administrators in the process of employing Substitute Teachers). Important message: Effective October 12th, 2011 all Substitute Teachers must attend a one-day Orientation Session BEFORE being put on AESOP to be active as a Substitute Teacher for the HRSB. Applicants may register for the mandatory one-day session through the Human Resource Services Reception Desk once all required documents below have been submitted. Those candidates who have not yet submitted their complete package may be able to attend a scheduled PD session if space permits.

  • Deliver in person the following documentation to Human Resource Services reception desk at 33 Spectacle Lake Drive in Dartmouth during the hours of 8:30am to 4:00pm (incomplete applications will not be accepted):

    Two written references from individuals who have observed the quality of your teaching (i.e. cooperation teacher, principal or university supervisor/advisor).

    A copy of your valid Nova Scotia Teacher's License (number only will not be accepted).

    1. An original or copy of original course transcripts in support of teaching license and B.Ed delivered in person (downloaded copies from the Internet will not be accepted).

    2. A current Criminal Records Check - available from your local Police or RCMP detachment.  Must be issued within the past three months.

    3. A VOID cheque or bank deposit form completed by your financial institution.

    4. You must log on to the on-line New Employee Orientation to obtain access to the additional forms required.  Log into myHRSB (myhrsb.ca) and choose the  "New Employee Orientation" link in the drop down menu to the right of the page, then click on the "First things First" link (located under the welcome videos from Carole and Irvine). In addition to several required information/tax forms to fill out, you will be asked to complete a Child Abuse Registry - Request for Search Form (a copy of your Driver’s License or Health Card must accompany this form).

Once all documentation has been collected and verified, you have attended the mandatory one-day new substitute orientation we begin the process to activate you to Aesop, an automated substitute placement service provided by Frontline Placement Technologies which uses integrated internet and telephone technologies to assist School Administrators in the process of employing Substitute Teachers.

During periods of heavy volume, processing times may be delayed for non-priority areas to APPROXIMATELY 4-6 WEEKS.  PLEASE NOTE PRIORITY AREAS INCLUDE:  RURAL SCHOOLS and SPECIALTY SUBJECT AREAS SUCH AS FRENCH IMMERSION, LEARNING CENTRE, RESOURCE, MUSIC & PHYS ED.

Once you have been activated we will email your login information including your ID and PIN number. You will then be able to personalize your Aesop account by selecting your preferred schools and managing your call times and availability.

NOTE: French candidates must also complete a successful interview with the HRSB French Program Consultants who will assess the candidate's competency in French (oral and written).
