Madeline Symonds Middle School supports local food bank

The Student Events Committee at Madeline Symonds Middle School sold
candy grams and held a friendly competition amongst the homerooms to
see who could donate the most food for those in need this season. In
total, 1200 items were donated and more than $500 was raised for the
local food bank.

The Feather Project: Timeline of Flight

Education Minister Marilyn More and students Dylan Day and Amanda
Field stand in front of the “Feather Project: Timeline of Flight,” a large
multimedia installation at the Department of Education. The collaborative
project, involving many students, integrated art into the science curriculum
at J.L. Ilsley High School.

Tantallon Elementary sends Christmas to Afghanistan

Students and staff at Tantallon Elementary have been busy writing
Christmas cards, making decorations and creating a CD of Christmas
songs and messages for members of the Canadian Military who are
serving in Afghanistan this holiday season. They wanted to let the men
and women of the Canadian Military know that they think of them
throughout the year and appreciate everything they do.

Halifax West celebrates Multiculturalism

Every year Halifax West High School dedicates a week to celebrate
diversity and to foster greater understanding within their community.
The theme for this year was “Building Bridges”. Many events took place
students, staff and community members enrich and create relationships.
The events included keynote speakers, a cultural conference for all
grade 10 students, a multicultural show attended by over 600 people and
cultural awareness workshops. The week was a great reminder to all
of the importance of building bridges to link all of us together as there is
only one race, the human race.

Mount Edward student honours father's memory

Erin Pettipas, a student at Mount Edward Elementary recently led an
intiative at her school to collect winter clothing for those in need. Erin led
the initiative in memory of her father, who she remembers as someone
who was always helping others. As a result, more than 400 articles of
clothing were donated to Coats for Kids. Erin is pictured above with the
clothing loaded into an FX 101.9 van to be delivered.

Students, Our Children Stand Up

Our Children magazine, with help from sponsors Mic Mac Mall, Metro
Transit and bullying.org, recently hosted a poster contest in support of
Bullying Awareness Week. Pictured above are the winners for each
category: Drew Hart (Primary - Grade 2), Anisa Sobhani (Grades 3 - 4)
and Calla Murray (Grades 5 - 6). Also pictured are teachers Marlo Kennedy
and Shanta Thibeau.

Each received a $100 Mic Mac Mall gift certificate, their school class each
received Stand Up to Bullying bracelets, and their teachers each received
a certificate to take an online Bullying Awareness course free of charge.
In addition, the three winning posters will be displayed on Metro Transit busses.

Cunard students have a favourite "Choyce"

Local author Lesley Choyce visited Cunard Jr. High recently through the
Writers in the Schools program. Choyce, one of the students favourite
authors, encouraged the students to explore their own creativity
through their writing.
