DID YOU KNOW?

Three HRSB schools have access to coaching support from a trained African Nova Scotian coach.

Stand Up Against Bullying Day
is Thursday, September 8

On this day we are encouraging schools to set a positive tone for the school year by engaging students in activities that focus on the importance of building positive, healthy relationships with and among each other.

Promote respect
Teachers can set the tone by guiding a discussion about the meaning of respect. Refer to your school matrix!

Communicate
Consider having a school-wide meeting to make a commitment to bullying prevention. Students from each classroom can generate a list of expectations they have to feel safe in school. (“I can wear what I want and not worry about being teased;” “I can walk into any part of the school without fear;” “I know my teachers and other adults in the school will help me if I report bullying,” etc.)

Before or after the school-wide meeting, have a class discussion about the importance of bystander power. Brainstorm ways students can stand up for each other if they witness a bullying incident on the bus or playground, in the classroom or lunchroom, and even off school grounds. Remind them of the importance of reporting bullying to adults in the school and at home.

Teach students how to resolve conflicts peacefully
Commit to establishing a peer mediation program, or a bystander intervention program such as Step Up or U Matter at your school to encourage students to identify and practice peaceful conflict resolution and the value of conflict intervention.

Support safety
On September 8th review your school matrix with each class and motivate students to commit to building a safe and positive school environment.

Unite in action
Highlight the importance of helping each other at school. Have your students spend some time discovering the impact a small group of people can make.

More Activities
Here's a list of activity suggestions for Stand Up Against Bullying Day. These ideas may or may not be applicable to all grade levels at your school; however, they may be adapted where appropriate. To view a PDF of the list, click here.
