East St. Margaret's Students Try Sledges

Students at East St. Margaret’s Elementary recently enjoyed the
opportunity to test hockey sledges as part of their weekly ice skating
sessions at the St. Margaret’s Bay Centre. The sledges were generously
provided by the Halifax Regional Municipality’s recreation department.
Students will have the chance to try the sledges again during their next
session on February 1st.
Another Outstanding HRSB Principal!
Gary Walker, Principal of Halifax West High School, has been named one of
Canada’s Outstanding Principals for 2012! Gary is one of 40 principals from
every province and territory being honoured by The Learning Partnership for
exceptional leadership. Outstanding Principals are nominated by their peers,
school staff and community members. Gary will receive his award at a
ceremony on February 28 in Toronto.

The Meaning of Home

Congratulations to Kate Barkhouse, grade six student at Crichton Park
School! Kate is a winner in the Genworth Financial Canada 'Meaning of
Home' Contest. Kate wrote a poem about what home means to her and
was selected as one of the 5 runner-up entries out of approximately
3000 contestants across Canada.
Kate will be awarded an iPod Touch and a pizza party for her class.
Also, Genworth Financial Canada will donate one $5,000 grant to a
Habitat for Humanity affiliate, which will support the building of a new

Unsung Heroes
Artist Robert Small recently unveiled this year’s official African Heritage
Month poster at John MacNeil Elementary School. Nova Scotia's 28th
annual African Heritage Month celebrations will pay tribute to Unsung

Prince Arthur Junior High and Sobeys Give Back
Prince Arthur Junior High recently raised $1850 in change and a large
donation of food during their annual Harvest Change and Food Drive.
When Sobeys Penhorn Mall heard of their efforts, they donated another
$650 to bring the total amount raised to $2500. All monies raised was
returned directly to the community to support families, including donations
to the Salvation Army and Margaret’s House. Congratulations to students
and staff of Prince Arthur, and to Sobeys Penhorn Mall for their efforts in
making this fundraiser an enormous success.
Blue Jays visit a hit with St. Stephen's students

Three members of the Toronto Blue Jays, along with former Jay Roberto
Alomar, visited St. Stephen's Elementary on January 12 as part of their
goodwill tour to Eastern Canada. Pictured above is Eric Thames hamming
it up with some of the students. Alomar, Thames, Brett Cecil and J.P.
Arencibia proved to be a big hit for the students and staff.
Grosvenor-Wentworth Park teacher receives Governor General Award

In December, Andrew Stickings, a grade five teacher at École Grosvenor -
Wentworth Park School, was one of six teachers in the country to receive
the Governor General’s Award for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History.
Stickings is pictured above receiving his award from His Excellency the
Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada. To read

Gertrude Parker students support local community organization
The Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) of École Gertrude Parker School
recently completed another successful “Cram-A-Car” food drive. During
the month of December, students brought in food items and just before
the holiday break they filled a car to overflowing with their donations.
All donations were delivered to Beacon House that afternoon.
