
In late fall of 1998, the Board agreed to launch an award that would recognize community members who have made outstanding contributions toward fulfilling the Mission Statement of the Halifax Regional School Board. Members agreed that at their regular monthly meeting they would recognize community members. The recipients are all long-term volunteers and through their skills and talents have contributed to the success of their school community

Harry R. Hamilton Elementary
Heather has been a volunteer at Harry R Hamilton for more than 10 years. As a grandmother, she gives many hours of her time to support the school. She provides many beginning readers with an opportunity to practice their reading. She is a helper in the After School Gymnastics Club which meets twice a week. She has supported many fundraising events at the school. Recently our school started a Breakfast Club and Heather quickly decided that coming to school before 7 am would be a good way to start her day and to help start the day for the many children in the club. She has been a willing helper for special events in classrooms and school-wide. Staff and students appreciate all that Heather does to support our school. Auburn Drive High
It Ms. Karen MacLeod has been an active volunteer in the Dartmouth School system since 1995 – the year her oldest daughter enrolled in primary. The roles Karen served over the past 15 years have been many. She was a member of Site Based Planning Committee at Caldwell Elementary, Block Parent, School Representative, also at Caldwell. She worked as a Safe Arrival Volunteer at both Caldwell and Astral Dr Junior High. She was involved as a Reading Partner at Caldwell Road and Karen has attended various workshops put on by HRSB such as Learning and Reading Partners Program (2000), SAC Roles and responsibilities Workshop (2009). Karen was a member of the Parent Teacher Organization and School Advisory Council at Caldwell Road Elementary, Astral Drive Junior High and Auburn Drive High School. On these committees she served as Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and Colby area community representative. Karen also served as the Discipline Committee Chairperson at both the junior high and high school levels. Karen has been a member of the Diversity Committee at Auburn Drive. Ms. MacLeod has been an unfailing advocate for families and children in her community and I am proud to recommend her for the Golden Apple Award. O'Connell Drive Elementary PTA
O’Connell Drive Elementary

HeatherThe Parent Teacher Association at O'Connell Drive has a long history of raising in excess of $10,000 for the school annually. The time and thought put into fundraising events goes beyond the expectations for any PTA. They have supplied teachers with thousands of dollars in resources, paid for class trips and are currently working on an $85,000 playground initiative. In addition to funds raised for the school, this keen group of volunteers have also organized fluoride programs, guided reading, school photography, teacher appreciation week and many other events normally organized by staff members. The staff and students at O'Connell Drive Elementary would like to thank them for their dedication to our school. Roberta MacIntosh
Elizabeth Sutherland
It Roberta is a single working mother of two of our students at Elizabeth Sutherland. (Jonathan grade three and Patricia grade seven) She volunteers four out of five days a week at our school. On Mondays Roberta prepares healthy cookies, parfaits and bags of carrots and grapes for our school canteen. Tuesdays she participates in the elementary school fluoride program and helps to prepare for Thursday’s hot lunch program. Thursday’s Roberta comes in to pop popcorn and completes the preparation of the food for our hot lunch. On Fridays Roberta does the elementary canteen, stalks the canteen for the following week and places orders through the main office. She is also willing to lend a hand when available at school activities and events throughout the year. In addition to her volunteer role she is employed at Elizabeth Sutherland as a Lunch Monitor. Anne Louise Desrosiers

It is with great pleasure that we put forth the name of Anne Louise Desrosiers for the Golden Apple Award. Mrs. Desrosiers is an integral member of the SCT community and a very active member of our PTA. She consistently assists with school events, supports teachers in the classroom and is supportive of school administration. Mrs. Desrosiers has served on the PTA executive in many capacities. She has recently been the president of our PTA for the last 2 years and is co-chairing that responsibility again this year. Under her leadership, the PTA has held many fundraising initiatives to purchase much needed materials for our classes as well as community based social events which add to the positive climate of the school. This year, Mrs. Desrosiers is also the editor for the PTA newsletter The Tupper Times. Mrs. Desrosiers understands the challenges faced by schools, children and parents today. She is a strong and eloquent advocate for our school community. It is with great pleasure that we put forth the names of Natasha and Brian Watson for the HRSB Golden Apple Award. Mr. and Mrs. Watson are integral members of the SCT community. They have supported all school events during the years their children have been at our school. The Watsons have directed their energies to work with classroom teachers by being class parents, organizing special events, drives for school trips and doing whatever is needed to make things run smoothly. Natasha has been a library volunteer for the last 8 years. Brian has coordinated our annual Sports Day for the last 8 years. They are key members of our PTA and have held many executive positions over the years. They have also been involved in major fundraising events such as our annual February event and our Spring Fling. Their positive enthusiasm for our learning community and their belief in the education of the whole child has been continually reflected in their work at our school. Alderney Elementary
Laura continues to be an active and visible volunteer at Alderney School even though her children have since moved on. Laura works as a lunch monitor, but she also volunteers to pick up and deliver all the items for our school canteen and special events. She gathers and drops off all of the schools recycling and has promoted school spirit throughout the community. She is a tireless and energetic volunteer who consistently puts the well being of our school at the forefront. Laura is a very caring and nurturing individual who is well respected and loved by all of the students and staff! Bagels At Eight Breakfast Club
Burton Ettinger Elementary
Group Members: Tara Hatfield, Bernie Imbeault, Ruth Power-Byrne, Kendra Gillis-Walker, Karen Brown, Judith Jarrett. A group of dedicated community volunteers since 2002, who are joined each morning by 40 to 50 students for “Bagels at Eight”. The École Burton Ettinger School teachers and community volunteers serve well over 3000 nutritious breakfasts each year. Not only are children provided with breakfast to begin the day on a positive note, but student volunteers are afforded a wonderful service learning opportunity, as student leaders assist in the preparation, service and clean-up of yogurt, fresh fruit, cereal, juice and bagels. Once each month "specials" such as pancakes, smoothies, grilled cheese sandwiches, or egg and sausage ‘McMuffins’ are served for the Principal’s Breakfast. The volunteers’ dedication to ensuring the students have a healthy breakfast is a testament to the strength of volunteerism in our community. Brian and Bonnie Fisher
Prince Arthur Junior High
Bonnie and Brian Fisher: Prince Arthur Junior High's "number 1 volunteer team". They are there for all students at Prince Arthur. Bonnie has served on our active SAC for three years. In addition to attending school meetings, she attended Board PD, as well as, Imagine Our Schools sessions. Brian has acted as chauffeur and chaperone on class trips, Math Olympiad and special events. He participated with our Duke of Edinburgh students on the 14.2 km practice walk (although we forgive him for bringing his bike). Brian has also volunteered to present to our grade 7 students on the topic of geology. Both parents assisted with our first community flea market and both parents are huge supporters and assistants with our band program and our community band. Bonnie and Brian continue to be there for whatever we need support with. We are very grateful! Bev has been helping out at Eastern Consolidated for the past six years. Some of the things Bev has been involved in includes helping out with the Hot Lunch program where she cooks great meals for the students once every two weeks, she is a reliable volunteer with the Breakfast Program, she assists with school trips, and she is a valuable member of the Parents in Education group. The students at Eastern are very fortunate to have such a dedicated volunteer helping out at our school! Ocean View Elementary
Mr. Oakey is a proud Ocean View Alumna, and has been a committed volunteer at our school for many years. He has dedicated countless hours to our students and developed a wonderful rapport with many children. He has also established a chess club and hosts grade level tournaments for the students. He volunteers in our library as well as our early literacy program. He has a love for reading and shares this with various classrooms on a daily basis. Mr. Oakey also has a passion for dominos and often conducts lessons that help students connect math to real life events. We also benefit from his incredible school wide domino displays! We sincerely appreciate his devotion to our students and school community and wanted to thank him for all he does! Lynn has donated an enormous amount of time and energy into helping out at our school. Part of what she does is being the Chair of our PTA for the past 5 years. She also oversees the school's major fundraiser, our Annual Parent Teacher Dinner Auction which realizes over $8 to $10 thousand every year. She wrote a book, "The Little School That Could", to help support the Chapters Grant that our school received. Lynn helps out with meals for the teachers during teacher appreciation week, she reads to the children, school trips and she helps out with the canteen. Our students are very fortunate to have such a dedicated volunteer to help out with all the extras at our school! During the past 7 years, Lori MacLeod and Tina Bowdridge have selflessly given their time and talents to help the students and staff at Harrietsfield Elementary. They have been leading members of our Home and School Parent Group, volunteered in the school library, the Safe Arrival program and countless other school programs. Lori and Tina have modeled active citizenship, caring and sacrifice as they responded to the needs of the school and community by chaperoning events, organizing activities, providing transportation and donating materials and funds. In addition to supporting numerous groups and organizations in Eastern Passage, Kaye MacIntyre makes the time to commit one morning a week to volunteer in our school library and also assists with the Book Fairs. Ms. MacIntyre became a volunteer at the Seaside Library ten years ago. Every week when students are selecting books at Seaside, they are graced with this kind grandmother’s caring ways. It is impressive that during conversation with the students she knows every one by name.
