What do you want to do with the rest of your life? That’s one of the toughest decisions you’ll have to make after graduating from high school. Your guidance counsellor can help you figure out the right path to take.

Many students choose to go to one of the province’s 11 universities to earn an undergraduate degree that can lead to a rewarding and well-paid professional career.

That’s not for everyone, though, and there are other choices. For example, Nova Scotia Community College offers 115 programs at 13 campuses across the province, with more than 8,000 full-time students.

You can earn a certificate, diploma, and advanced diploma programs in applied arts, business, health, human services, trades, technical and technology fields.

Graduates usually have no trouble finding a job. In fact, 90 per cent of the college’s graduates are employed; 81 per cent in their field. And 94 per cent of NSCC grads are living and working in Nova Scotia.

Another option is apprenticeship programs, offering 55 designated trades. You could learn to become a chef, a bricklayer, a plumber or a webpage designer.

Apprenticeship is an agreement among an apprentice, an employer and the government of Nova Scotia in which the apprentice works for the employer in exchange for extensive supervised, on-the-job experience and technical training. Theoretical education is also offered online or in the classroom.

More than 40 per cent of new jobs will be in the skilled trades and technologies over the next 20 years.
