Frequently Asked Questions

How old must my child be to register for school this coming year?
All children must be 5 years of age on or before December 31, 2012. Proof of age must be shown at the school before your child may attend. A Birth Certificate or Passport is required. Proof of primary residence, such as a recent utility bill, is also required.

Why do I need to register my child in February to start in September?
The number of students attending a school varies from year to year. To ensure your child's school has appropriate teachers and resources, registration must be completed before March.

Can I register my child in the school in my baby-sitter's area?
All children must be registered in the neighbourhood school where they live. You may obtain an Out-of-Area Request form at your neighbourhood school to have your child attend a different school. Decisions on placement for September will be made on the last day of school in June.

Can I register my child for French Immersion after March 1?
All children who live in an area of eligibility and register before March 1 are guaranteed a place in the French Immersion program. Note: This is a guarantee of a seat in the program, but not at a specific school. Placements are determined by the School Administration department. Registrations for the French Immersion program received after March 1 are decided on the last day of school in June.

What does "Primary Cap" mean?
The Department of Education has implemented an initiative to keep classrooms in grades Primary to 3 at 25 students.

When will I find out if my child will be able to attend an Out-of Area school?
Parents will be notified of Out-of-Area Request decisions on the last day of school in June.

Do I have to apply for Out-of-Area status every year?
No. Once approved, the child is considered a student in the Out-of-Area school for subsequent years.
