Tutoring: Bright Minds at Work
Junior and senior high school students struggling to make the grade are getting some high-powered help from straight A students at Dalhousie University. The Golden Key International Honour Society has been tutoring junior high students since 2003-04.
The university students volunteer to travel to the schools to help children with their toughest subject, whether it’s math, science, English or French. The coaching has helped students score better grades, and build self-confidence.
For the first time, some of those students are thinking about going to college or university after finishing school. During 2004-05, society members also began working with some high school students by challenging those who are gifted, and helping them realize their full potential. The program is sponsored by Dalhousie, the school board, PriceWaterhouseCooper, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Halifax Regional Police Service.
